Greetings from Thomas (aka TomTom)! TomTom is a shy and mellow homebody that takes some time to warm up, but once he does, he is so incredibly sweet, affectionate, and goofy. His favorite pastime is laying, followed by more laying, and then seeking attention by asking for chin scratches (if you put out your hands, he will rest his head on it!). Despite this, he is definitely not a lapdog and is more than happy with belly and paw rubs.

On his walks, TomTom is very curious about the surroundings, people and other dogs. He will happily sniff the same patch of grass or pole in his morning and afternoon walks, but generally doesn’t resist when you nudge him away. He is apprehensive of unfamiliar environments so gradual, repeated introductions to new spaces is the best way to build his confidence.

TomTom enjoys going up to other people, usually adults, to get more chin scratches! Likewise, he doesn’t mind other dogs and will sniff them vigorously, but he will not enthusiastically play with them. He seems indifferent to kids/babies and the only time his fosters have ever heard him make any sound is when an overeager puppy jumped on him. His fosters notice that he likes his own space, especially when napping. This friendly introvert appreciates having his own space to decompress when he needs it.

His fosters have been working on recall training (“come”) and his leash pulling, and for the most part TomTom is learning well. He responds to positive reinforcement with either boiled chicken or praise/affection. He comes pre-trained with knowing how to “sit” and “down”. He “lays” instinctively, as he loves belly rubs.

TomTom would thrive in a home that is somewhere more residential or suburban, tucked away from typical city noises such as motorcycles, trains, construction, and celebration fireworks. On walks, loud and sudden noises will make him skittish and it takes some time for him to calm down afterwards. He is a very alert dog in the house but is fine with the sounds of appliances (vacuum, dishwasher, washer, TV). With enough patience, reassurance, and positive reinforcement, this shy guy will become more confident and less fearful.

We are looking for a home who understands the responsibilities of owning and raising a dog as a member of their family. TomTom is patiently waiting!
