Meet Miss Gladys (formerly Anko)!

Miss Gladys is an adorable female Maltese approximately six years old, weighing in at about 4 pounds.  She came into rescue in South Korea, along with over 1400 other dogs, from an illegal puppy mill.  Recently she arrived in the states under the care of Love & Second Chances on December 29, 2023.  Despite living in horrific conditions, Miss Gladys has settled in beautifully into her foster home in Pleasanton and has been enjoying the good life.  She is now ready to join a permanent home.

Miss Gladys arrived spayed, microchipped and complete with vaccinations.  She was a bit thin, but her appetite has significantly improved and she is gradually putting on some weight.  She is a kick to watch while eating, taking a mouthful of food at a time out of her bowl to eat, only to return for more (a habit probably picked up at the puppy mill).  Miss Gladys enjoys an occasional treat, but is not considered to be food motivated.

Arriving to the states during winter, she has enjoyed the warmth of being inside so much that it has been difficult to train her to potty outside.  Since she is learning a new way and routine after 6 years in a puppy mill, her family must be patient with her as she continues to acclimate and adjust to outdoor pottying. However, she does well finding the potty pads inside to do her business and is learning to potty outside when taken outside to a pen.  Continued training is needed if Miss Gladys will be expected to go potty outside on her own.  Until then, her family must take the initiative to take her out frequently and routinely, giving her plenty of opportunities outside to be successful.

Miss Gladys is a snuggle bug.  Her preferred location is on your lap and is convinced that her new role in life is to keep you company.  Although she wants to be your constant companion, she does great in a crate snuggled in a fluffy blanket.  She’ll sleep through the night in her crate or will patiently wait in her crate for you to return home.  She rarely barks unless she has lost her patience with you (like leaving her in her pen to potty without your devoted attention).

The joy of toys has not yet been discovered by Miss Gladys, but that’s just a matter of time.  Soon she’ll be ready to play!  She gets along well with dogs of all sizes and loves people.  She currently sleeps and snuggles with her foster sibling.  Miss Gladys would do well with a family of any size, as long as they are all gentle with her, considering how tiny she is.  The same holds true for other dogs in the household: Miss Gladys is very small — she can easily be injured by rambunctious children or larger dogs.

Quality time with her humans is Miss Gladys’ priority.  Yet she’ll patiently wait for you if you must leave her alone for a bit.  She needs a patient and loving family who will give her the time and support she needs to adjust to life outside of a puppy mill.

We are looking for a home who understands the responsibilities of owning and raising a dog as a member of their family. Miss Gladys is patiently waiting!
