Kayla
Hi, I’m Kayla! My story didn’t start with me looking for a new family. My previous person had recurring health problems and, eventually, had to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender me to a shelter. That’s when Love and Second Chances stepped in and gave me the chance I needed. And now I’m ready for my next chapter.
I’m already housebroken when I have access to the outdoors. I’m good with other dogs, I don’t have separation anxiety, I’m not reactive on leash, and my foster family hasn’t seen any resource guarding. I’m still working on my leash skills.
I learn a lot by watching other dogs. They’ve taught me how to play nicely with toys and other dogs, when it’s time to settle down for a nap, how to patiently wait while dinner is being prepared, and even how to share a bed. I’m a good learner!
I also have a funny little obsession: I like being up high. Your chair? Mine. The back of the chair? Even better. The top of the table? Apparently that’s an excellent lookout post. And baby gates? Well… I consider those more of a suggestion than a boundary. I can climb and jump over short ones without giving it much thought! I’m learning that I don’t always need to be quite so creative about getting where I want to go. Taller gates—or simply allowing me access to the household rather than restricting me—will work best for me.
There are a few important things you should know so we can be sure we’re the right fit for each other.
I’m uncomfortable with nail trims, I find them frightening. At the groomer, a muzzle is used for nail care, and that has worked well. I will need people who respect my signals and help me build confidence gradually. I’m also not comfortable being crated, so I need a home that will not expect me to spend time in a crate.
Trust is something I’m still learning. I need time to feel safe with handling and to understand that people will listen when I’m uncomfortable. Because of this, an adult-only home is essential. My ideal family will be calm, patient, and experienced enough to give me clear boundaries while allowing me the time and space I need to form a relationship.
In return, I’ll give you my whole heart. I’m lovable. I love giving kisses. I’m funny. I’m affectionate. I’m smart. I’m a little mischievous. And I’m very, very good at finding the comfiest spot in the room.
I’m ready for a forever home where someone will love me for all that I am—including my long legs, my scruffy face, my jumping skills, my love of giving kisses, and the trust I’m still learning to build.
So… are you ready for me?
Love and Second Chances is looking for the right forever family for me and will be very selective about who gets to meet me. Please put thoughtful effort into your application—that’s the next step.
