Meet Malta! Malta was rescued from the shelter after spending 3 years of her life as an outdoor backyard dog in Berkeley before the owner surrendered her to the shelter.

Malta is a brilliant, athletic, and profoundly capable dog who is currently looking for a commited home in a quiet, low-density environment. She has overcome a rough start to life—being kept outside in a backyard for her first three years—to become an absolute rockstar. Malta is a car-ride pro, a loose-leash walking master, and an agility natural. She has been a star student in her structured training classes and has flawless indoor manners. She stays home alone completely uncrated, is non-destructive, and spends her days peacefully settling on her bed.

Malta is an independent soul who shows her deep trust and loyalty through a specific, leaning “hug” with her favorite people. She has also been wonderful with small kids under supervision, though her size and enthusiasm mean she’s best with a watchful eye. One of her greatest everyday joys is watching for and chasing squirrels.

Recently, she stayed with a trainer in a structured, quiet home with a balanced dog pack, and she was “perfect”—proving she can co-exist beautifully and thrive inside a stable canine group with clear boundaries. She showed everyone exactly who she is when she isn’t stressed.

Unfortunately, the “sensory overload” of apartment hallways, elevators, and busy office spaces triggers a level of panic and physical exhaustion in her that isn’t fair to her. This high-density environment causes her a debilitating level of anxiety, so finding her a home that matches her biological needs will give her a chance to thrive with a full, rewarding life.

**What she needs:**
A “low-density” life. Malta needs a home with a private, fenced yard in a quiet suburb or rural area—somewhere she doesn’t have to navigate elevators, shared hallways, or close-proximity, on-leash encounters with strange neighborhood dogs. To manage her environmental anxiety, she is on a consistent, twice-daily regimen of behavioral medications, which her new handler must be committed to maintaining.

Malta’s owner has full medical and behavioral support records from a Veterinary Behaviorist and a trainer to ensure a smooth, fully supported transition.
