Maverick
Meet Maverick! Maverick is a big heart, big smile, big Aussie butt wiggles —Maverick has it all. This five-year-old blue merle Australian Shepherd may not have the icy blue eyes his breed is famous for, but his warm amber eyes tell you everything you need to know: this boy is all love. When Maverick first came to us, he weighed a whopping 88 pounds (more linebacker than herding dog). With time, healthy meals, and daily walks, he’s now a healthy 62 pounds —fit, happy, and ready for adventures. Maverick’s journey hasn’t been easy. When his beloved owner passed away in 2024, he and his sister Misty lived alone on a rural property for seven long months. A kind relative made the 40-mile drive every other day just to feed them, but the dogs were starved for companionship.
Despite everything, Maverick’s spirit never broke. The first time we met him, he greeted us with a full-body wiggle and leaned in for scratches like he had been waiting his whole life to love and be loved again. Today, Maverick is thriving. He’s mellow, affectionate, and happiest simply being in the presence of his people. If you’re headed out for a neighborhood stroll or a weekend hike, he’s in. If you’d rather curl up with a blanket and snacks, he’s in. His motto in life is simple: “Whatever you want to do is exactly what I want to do, too.”This sweet boy greets every visitor with a wag and a wiggle, then politely requests payment in pets before returning to his regularly scheduled nap. He doesn’t jump, doesn’t bark at guests, and gets along beautifully with adults, kids, dogs, and even cats (though it did take him a minute to realize the 10-lb cat wasn’t actually in chargeand he didn’t need to hide)
Maverick is house-and crate-trained, rides well in the car, and handles baths like a gentleman. On leash, he’s a “man on a mission” —not one to stop and sniff every blade of grass. He’s also mastered sit, stay, down, wait, and off. And while he takes food gently, don’t blink during mealtime —this boy is a speed-eating champion. His favorite activities? Daily walks, backyard patrols with the cat, a casual game of fetch, and squeezing his not-so-small self into any spot right next to you. Sometimes he’ll even serenade you with little pig-like grunts that are as funny as they areendearing.
The Perfect Home: Maverick would thrive with someone who works from home, is retired, or simply loves the idea of having a loyal shadow by their side. He doesn’t have separation anxiety —he just genuinely enjoys being near his people. A family or person who can give him a daily walk (with occasional “skip days” swapped for couch time and belly rubs) would be ideal. In a perfect world, Maverick and Misty would find their forever home together. They’ve leaned on each other through loss, transition, and growth, and it’s a joy to see how they play and nap side by side. But whether together or on his own, one thing is certain: Maverick is a gem —mellow, affectionate, and endlessly loyal. He’s ready to trade in his foster home for a forever family where he can keep doing his favorite thing: just being with you
