Persephone

Meet Persephone! Sweet Persephone (Nini) is a happy, friendly, gentle, curious, smart, enthusiastic baby-giant puppy girl. She is a Mastiff / mix, about 7 months old. If you’re a big-dog person, then you need to meet her! She will steal your heart with her soul-gazing eyes and happy, mellow love.
Persephone was rescued from an illegal meat farm after the owner abandoned the dogs to escape a wildfire that tore through the area. Sadly, the dogs were left stuck in their cages and many did not survive the fire. We cannot imagine the horror these dogs had to go through, not only being raised as meat dogs, but also surviving the wildfire. Fortunately for Persephone, she was in an area of the property that wasn’t badly burned, and she escaped with no injuries. Like Persephone in mythology, this loving girl was rescued from Hades and is ready to grow and blossom.
Persephone meets any new person with a wagging tail and a request for a gentle ear rub or snuggle. She does well with other dogs, wanting to play and just hang out. She is learning how to manage her size, and has to think about things like hills and stairs. Nini likes to jump up to greet her foster mom, so she wouldn’t be appropriate with small children at this time. She would be fine with children old enough to not be accidentally injured by an enthusiastic, giant puppy. (She’s currently 70 lbs and underweight. She will get over 100 full grown.)
Persephone is doing well with house-training. She currently has free access in and out of the yard, and has had no potty accidents in the house. She is learning about walking on leash – curious and happy, but also overwhelmed by noise or commotion. She needs to be boosted into the car, but does fine once in it. Nini has not been cat tested, but would probably be OK. She got to her foster home underweight, and with a history of having to compete for food, so there is a possibility of resource guarding. She is doing very well now that she knows there will always be enough food for her.
Persephone is being fostered in El Sobrante. She is patiently waiting for someone with a heart big enough to hold her in it.
