Hi, my name is Emmie!  I’m a senior (9 year old) Shih Tzu. I’m dressed in brown and white cashmere with a bit of black on my face.  I spent most of my years in Korea. A rescuer found me in an apartment complex where I had been abandoned.  I think it was a breeder that abandoned me in my weakened state after they were finished with me at their puppy mill.  As pretty as I am, I guess I was just too old.

The nice rescue in Korea took care of me until Love & Second Chances asked if I would like to come to the United States!  So here I am!  Unfortunately, I wasn’t in the best condition when I arrived.  In fact, I was a mess: skin infections (no wonder I was itchy), ear infection, dry eyes, and cataracts.  And I’m deaf!  But my foster parents helped me get to the doctor and my recovery started.  After a month of hard work, I’m now feeling great! My skin has cleared up and my ears and eyes feel so much better!  I’ll need some continued maintenance (eye drops and medicated baths), but who doesn’t need a little extra care when they get old?

That’s my history but here is where I’m at now – Like most Shih Tzus, I snore (“like a truck driver,” so my foster dad says) and I sleep a lot like other seniors.  I’m good at going potty outside, but sometimes I forget if my routine is disrupted by guests (humans and dogs).  But I do enjoy meeting strangers and am not afraid of other dogs.  I like to play with my foster sisters, but only for a little while.  I can actually hold my own playing with the foster puppy, as long as she leaves me alone most of the time.  I like to talk (bark), but only for good reason (my foster dad sometimes needs a reminder when it’s dinner time).  I love relaxing in my foster dad’s lap, or in my super comfy clam shell bed.  (My foster mom says I can take my bed with me to my new home!)  I love a nice walk and I do great in the car!  My crate is where I sleep at night, but I like my foster mom or dad to carry me up the stairs.  And I love, love, love to sleep-in in the morning.

Did I tell you I’m deaf?  (My foster mom calls me, “special.”).  I’m not sure how that happened, but the good news is I’m unfazed by noisy distractions, dogs barking, the gardener, and probably fireworks.  Because I can’t hear you, you and I are going to have to communicate differently.  Like using hand signals!  So if you want me, I highly recommend you do some googling on deaf dogs — it will be worth it, I promise.

I have nothing but time for naps and snuggles.  I’m looking for a BFF that will give me all the love and pampering I deserve and is willing to continue my care during my retirement years.  If you can handle all of me, and want a new best friend, please fill out an application and tell me about yourself!  Maybe we’ll get to meet!
