Meet Maroo! Maroo is an adorable 5 years old Shiba Inu! He is a typical Shiba Inu in a lot of ways – independent, strong-willed, and wants to stay close to his pack. He’s reserved towards strangers and slow to warm up to people, but is sweet once he knows and trusts you. He’s generally quiet, keeps to himself at home, and doesn’t need a lot of attention, but is also playful and always up for a game of fetch or a training session.
Maroo was surrendered by his previous owners due to biting and has been in a foster home for over a year. He’s been doing well with his foster human and foster brother (a passive shiba inu), but could still resort to biting around certain triggers. We have been working with a professional trainer to address his behavior quirks, and he’s been making notable improvements.
From Maroo’s trainer:
Maroo has traditional characteristics of a Shibu Inu – alert, keen senses, and a hardy companion. He is reserved initially with strangers, and he does have a protective nature.
Maroo can bond well when introduced in a thoughtful methodical way. He has bitten when introduced to petting too quickly or being surprised. I am working with his impulse control around being handled and approached. This is not a dog for a first-time dog owner. Maroo is strong-willed and initially suspicious so needs a calm and assertive presence in his life to guide him through his insecurities and anxieties.
Ideal home for Maroo:
• Someone that is willing to understand his triggers, commit to an ongoing training program with his trainer, and be thoughtful and patient in their relationship building with Maroo• Experienced dog owner (experiences with Shiba Inus a plus)
• One- or two-person household with no children
• Maroo can live with a dog when introduced properly and making sure that their personalities are a good fit for long-term companionship
