Meet Candie! Candie was found alone on a busy road in San Jose — dragging herself along the pavement, unable to use her back legs, covered in her own waste. No one knew how long she’d been out there or how she’d survived at all. She was brought to the San Jose shelter, where vets suspected a neurological issue affecting her spine. Her back legs simply wouldn’t work. In an overcrowded shelter system, a dog who can’t walk doesn’t get much time — and Candie landed on the euthanasia list.
A partner rescue was able to get her out of the shelter and into foster care. What happened next still amazes everyone who knows her story: within two days in her foster home, Candie started walking. Not long after, she was running. Jumping onto the couch. Following her foster from room to room like she’d never known anything but movement. The dog who couldn’t stand in a shelter kennel was suddenly living life fully — a little wobbly, sure, but never giving up, never falling.
Today, Candie is proof of what a second chance can do. Her back legs are still a little weaker than the rest of her — she’ll need an adopter willing to help her keep building that strength with some gentle exercises — but otherwise, she is simply fine. More than fine. She’s joyful, affectionate, funny-looking in the best way, and fiercely devoted to whoever she’s with.
