Meet Henry! Henry is an adorable 4 year old Golden Retriever. He was rescued from Lodi, CA where he was living outside in the country, fending for himself. He ate garbage and scraps with no access to fresh water. Henry was filthy and covered in mats upon being rescued. He responds well to having his mats cut off and getting bathed.

Henry wouldn’t eat kibbles at first, but now will eat dry food. He enjoys treats! Henry responds well to training and loves affection. He does have resource guarding around food, his current home is working with him on it and he is getting less protective of his food. His new home will need to understand resource guarding and will feed him separately and not bother him when he’s eating.

He adores taking walks and sitting in front of you to get pets. Henry loves playing fetch with his tennis balls. He enjoys sleeping in the bed or on the floor. He is a big love bug, but needs to be rehabilitated to overcome his anxiety about resources.

Ideal home would be one where the owner has a lot of knowledge about and compassion for a dog with severe resource guarding around food, one who would work on a regular basis to train him and seek a professional trainer, one who understands that golden retrievers can have issues too and aren’t just big teddy bears. He will need an owner who would be patient, kind, consistent, and firm; one who is not emotional and can always approach the dog with confidence and a sense of calm. The best home situation for Henry would be a single owner with no children who can provide consistency and stability. He may possibly be able to live with a couple and one other dog if they are both committed to safety measures surrounding resource guarding, but no children. Henry is patiently waiting!
