Helping death-row, abused, and neglected dogs find forever homes. We do not discriminate by breed, age or special needs. As long as we’re capable of helping out, we will never say no!

Arum

Name Arum
Gender Male
Age 4 years old
Breed Jindo/Shiba mix
Weight 33lbs.
Dog Arum tolerates other dogs when they sniff him but he doesn’t exactly like it when they stick around too long. He is still learning how to interact with dogs and has shown signs of wanting to play but is too skittish to take that step. He is fine in a home with the other dog as long as the dog is chill and leaves him alone for the most part.
Cat Best in home without. He has a high prey drive, so he has a tendency to want to chase stray cats when we run across them out on walks.
Kids Best 13+ due to shyness. Arum needs a soft approach. He has barked the neighbor’s kid when she was screaming excitedly at him.
Crate-trained Scared of the kennel
Housebroken Yes
Leash Good on leash, will pull a little when he sees something he wants to chase
Behavioral Some leash reactivity due to his high prey drive. He doesn’t like it when dogs stick around sniffing his area too long or tries to hump him so he does give the warning snarl. VERY skittish so he is reactive to loud noises and sudden movement (getting better but will definitely need continuous work). Flinches a little when you go in to pet him, especially his lower body area (leg, back, sides of his face) - again just needs a soft approach and for him to get used to you. He is also afraid of the dark so when night time comes he paces, pants and whines softly from the darkness. He eventually does settle down but again it’s something he will have to get used to.
Barker He doesn’t bark much but as he opens up he will bark at strangers approaching/entering the house.
Adoption fee $650
Location Bay Area, CA
Additional Note Korea International program

Meet Arum! Arum is an adorable 4 year old Shiba mix. He was rescued from an abusive owner. There were originally two dogs there, but one of them disappeared somewhere, and the remaining one was Arum. He had been left chained outside his house where he was subjected to constant abuse from either his drunken owner or a drunken passerby. We are not sure how long he was left in this state but we can confidently say that this life had left him traumatized. Poor fella was finally rescued after one abusive rainy night and has been on the road to recovery since.

  • If not for his early life and traumatic experience, Arum is the perfect dog. He is quiet, really good at being left alone and does not bark at passing dogs, sirens or other noises. He is slowly getting accustomed to the city life so a lot of noises would pique his attention but his fear prevents him from fully investigating its origins. As he gets used to the home and starts feeling safe, he will bark at strangers that come into the home but otherwise he prefers to be left to his own devices. When his humans come home, he is learning to accept the excitement of welcoming them with tail wags.

  • Arum’s favorite food is chicken and he can probably smell chicken from a mile away. He loves treats as well but because of his cautious behavior he isn’t exactly motivated by it unless there are no distractions. He is working on sit but seems to only be able to perform it in our hallway rug.

  • He loves walks most of all. When his fosters go to the front door he instantly gets excited and is always ready to go out, no matter how many times you take him. Maybe it’s because he was left outside most of his life, but we feel he gets a little more comfortable outside. For this reason, his new home would be best suited for him if it has a fenced yard for him to roam and sunbathe in – he absolutely loves sunbathing and will come to the door if he wants to come back in.

  • He has an affinity for rugs or carpeted floors. We noticed that he tends to stay in areas where there is a rug and in the beginning he would rarely move from a spot. The cool touch of hardwood might be odd to him. But time makes it better as he does move around the house more often now. But, he still prefers to be on a rug or carpet. He has started enjoying playing catch with his toys and chewing toys on the rug.

  • Arum is not your typical dog. He prefers his own space and therefore is definitely not the snuggly type. He still has trauma so any potential adopters should understand that this will be a continued process. They will understand to have patience and caution when approaching him with pets. It will take time for him to feel safe but he will definitely appreciate the love and care, even if they are unfamiliar to him.

  • Note: We noticed that he has a tendency to warm up to women a little easier compared to men (we suspect his past abuser was a male), but as time goes by he is definitely more excited when his foster dad comes home compared to his foster mom.

We are looking for a home who understands the responsibilities of owning and raising a dog as a member of their family. Arum is patiently waiting!
